As the linked article from the Washington Post illustrates, there are good reasons to doubt that there was ever a historical Jesus. And yet, when I go through the gospels I can’t shake the feeling that there must be something more to it then a simple story. There’s just too much justification going on, too much manufacturing to make the story “fit”. I can’t get rid of the feeling that at the heart of the Jesus myth, there existed a real person around whom all these stories have been wrapped. Was he divine? No, of course not. Was he a miracle worker? No, not at all. Perhaps a misguided rabbi. Perhaps someone who was delusional and actually believed he was the Messiah. Perhaps someone who was set up as the Messiah by fanatical followers. With the lack of sources and the centuries of obfuscation and mystification, we’ll probably never know who, if anyone at all, is at the core of the myth.
There are clearly good reasons to doubt Jesus’ historical existence.
