Despite (or maybe thanks to) rumours that the EPP Group in the EU Parliament was going to try some last minute trickery to get ACTA off the agenda for this coming Wednesday, this latest threat has failed to materialize. This means that the countdown to the vote on ACTA in the European Parliament is still running. July 4, 2012 is still the date this final vote is taking place. Is it a coincidence that July 4 is also Independence Day?
Those who have been following my blog and other reports on ACTA, know that the way to get to the final vote has been a long and twisty one. And we are not out of the woods yet, it seems. The EPP Group in the EU Parliament is home to such fine politicians as for instance Marielle Gallo, who has gone on record as saying that anti-ACTA protesting is the same as “soft terrorism”. Whatever soft terrorism is. I guess it involves very quiet bombs or so…
This particular lady has several other lovely ideas up her sleeve when it comes to ACTA too. When asked if she had a Plan B if ACTA should not be passed, she responded “I have an entire alphabet“. And that, ladies and gentlemen, shows how highly she esteems the public’s opinion.
However, it seems there has been some kind of controversy concerning the last and most blatant lobby push to get ACTA through the INTA committee (which has failed). That is itself a copyright violation. Can you taste the delicious irony?
Less than two days remain to contact your MEPs to vote against ACTA!
